2. Roscoe ‘Fatty’ Arbuckle
The first sex scandal to shake Hollywood involved comedian Roscoe ‘Fatty’ Arbuckle in 1921. Fatty, the first million-dollar star had attended a wild party in San Francisco and was in a company of struggling actress, Virginia Rappe.
The pair ended up in a hotel room together, but Rappe was heard screaming a few minutes later. Guests rushed to help only to find her writhing in pain from a ruptured bladder and accused Fatty of raping her! She died later that week as a result of the injuries and Fatty was charged with murder, which was later reduced to manslaughter. He was eventually cleared after three trials, but the public was insistent that he was guilty and would often heckle him in the streets.
