Janelle Monaé has already enticed her fans with a series of intriguing gender-fluid performances on the red carpet and in the sound studio. Now she’s confirmed that she identifies as pansexual in an interview with Rolling Stone’s Britanny Spanos.
The musician has been coy about her preferred sexual identity as a performer. She’s rocked androgynous three-piece suits on the red carpet and bold “pink vagina pants” in her latest music video, “Pynk.” Her costumes, lyrics, and videos have all been grist for the rumor mill that Monaé is bisexual, but the musician has now publically come out and said that she prefers “pansexual” in the rollicking interview.
Monaé hopes that her public stance and upcoming album, Dirty computer, offers support for anyone struggling to express their sexuality. We should all be as proud and open as Monaé, but we definitely can’t pull off those costumes. Dirty Computer is out tomorrow.
