#5 – Mantis shrimp

These odd and vivid looking shrimp have 12 shading receptors in their eyes – humans only have three. The mantis shrimp, or stomatopod, is a kind of marine shellfish. Most mantis shrimp can grow to around 3.9 inches (10 centimeters) long. Some can reach up to 15 inches in length (38 centimeters), but the biggest one ever caught measured a length of 18 inches (46 centimeters). It was found in the Indian River close to Fort Pierce, Florida, USA.
