#22 – Chimaera
The chimaera is sometimes known as the ghost shark or spookfish. Upon first inspection, they may look like sharks, and while sharks are their closest relative, they separated themselves (evolutionary speaking) more than 400 million years ago. The picture above is of a deep-sea chimaera. These creatures can live as deep as 8,500 feet (2,600 meters) down in the ocean or as shallow as 660 feet (200 meters).
