21. The Capsule Hotel, Netherlands
Working in an offshore oil rig is one of the most dangerous and difficult jobs in the world. It involves working with one of the most combustible objects in the world: oil. To ensure the safety of oil workers, they’re provided with a metallic capsule or pod, which is their only lifeboat should disaster strike. Now imagine turning these oil rig survival pods into hotels suites.
That’s exactly what the Capsule Hotel in the city of Den Haag in the Netherlands is all about. Dutch architect, Denis Oudendijk came across some little neat capsules while looking for an enclosed boat for a research project. He instantly fell in love with them that he bought them and turned them into comfortable floating hotels to give guests the real experience of surviving when an explosion occurs in an offshore oil rig.
