Black Panther hasn’t just been kicking butt on screen. Marvel’s latest superhero movie has also dominated the box office. Black Panther hauled in an estimated $630.9 million as of this weekend, beating The Avengers to become the highest grossing superhero movie in U.S. box office history! (Alright, we’re not counting inflation. This is just ticket sales, people.)
For comparison, The Avengers totalled $623.3 million in 2012 and was one of the first movies to blow through $1 billion worldwide. Black Panther has also pulled in $606.4 million internationally and is on track to surpass Iron Man 3 to become the third-highest grossing comic book movie ever—surpassed only by the two Avengers movies.
This is a massive boost for the movie’s supporters and proof positive that people want to see new ideas, new faces, and diverse stars on screen. After all, Pacific Rim: Uprising (starring John Boyega) knocked Black Panther out of the number one spot this week. Sometimes people just want to see a Black superhero rocking it on the big screen—take note, Hollywood.
