HIV is a virus, and AIDS is a disease. Becoming infected with HIV doesn’t automatically lead to AIDS. It takes a minimum of 10 years for the HIV virus to cause irreversible damage to the immune system to cause AIDS.

To prevent AIDS from happening to you, you should check yourself every 3-6 months. Sadly, right now there is no cure for HIV/AIDS, but someone who is HIV+ can keep the virus under control and prevent it from developing into AIDS.

AIDS is fatal because it makes the human body vulnerable to certain infections that wouldn’t normally occur in HIV- individuals. AIDS also increase the risk for certain cancers such as Kaposi sarcoma.
